Thanks. The last one now works. The first two do not, but that was just me playing around with the syntax trying to get it to work, so they probably should not (though it would be nice if I could do it without taking transpositions).

Sorry I did not post the initializer for my Matrix a.  Here it is

a = Matrix([[1, -1, 1, -1, 1, -1, 1, -1, 1 ],
            [2, 0, -1, -2, 0, 1, 2, 0, -1],
            [4, 0, -2, 0, 0, 0, -2, 0, 1 ],
            [2, 2, 2, 0, 0, 0, -1, -1, -1],
            [1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1]])

That should make it easier for someone to enter it if they want to try this.
