This is the code in Matrix.is_symmetric():

    def symmetric(self):
        if not self.is_square:
            return False
        m = self.clone()
        m.simplify()
        return (m == m.transpose())

I think using something like
(m - m.transpose()).simplify() == self.zeros(self.rows, self.cols)
would be better instead.
