I greatly recommend the presentation by Paul Zimmerman at SD6 about
the MPFR library: well-defined semantics for multiple-precision
floating-point numbers.
It was an awesome presentation, I am sure you will enjoy it.

Both MPFR and SymPy (mpmath) is in SAGE, so you can play with both of
them from Python in SAGE. So it might be interesting for you Fredrik
to compare mpmath to mpfr.
