As regards to getting started in contributing, please have a look at this https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/introduction-to-contributing As for GSOC, you can start fixing these easy to fix issues. https://github.com/sympy/sympy/labels/Easy%20to%20Fix to get the hang of the codebase. You can also look at the idea list of last year GSOC https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/GSoC-2014-Ideas But I am not sure how many of these ideas of are already implemented.
