Not sure if people know this but Gitter seems to support KaTeX so you can type a subset of math on Gitter, which is a very nice feature for us.

Speed improvements We received feedback from many people on the performance of Gitter. In a very short space of time we've reached over 100,000 registered users - quicker than we ever imagined - and had to focus our efforts on being able to handle that load and offer a speedy experience. We've made huge improvements to both our back-end and front-end performance. Page loads times have improved by more than 100% and scrolling now sits at a healthy 60fps. We've still got more work to do here, but we're sure you'll find it's a lot faster now. iOS improvements Yeah, we know! Our iOS app was very much a v1. We shipped an update to Apple last week and hope to have it in the store soon. It includes a number of performance and reliability improvements and we will start to add more features over the coming weeks and months. We will also start working to improve the Android app once this has been done. Updated syntax highlighting and KaTeX support We've updated our syntax highlighting engine, it's a lot faster, more accurate and supports more languages.
