the problem is in your openssl-dlls.
If i use your program with my openssl-dlls it works fine!
I use the following dlls:

Interesting, it is working here - it return authorization request
(error 401) instantly.
Could it be that Synapse is having trouble on the original poster's
machine of querying the nameserver? That could explain why it hangs. It
wouldn't explain why curl works, though ... because it needs to query
the nameserver too.
