They are often not even available on Unix. Older POSIX standards didn't 
specify if they had to be functions or macros. Newer do, but it is often 
ignored (though improving across the line)

Note that it is moot anyway, since FPC can do sockets communication 
without communicating with libc, and linking in libc for these functions 
alone would decrease cross-distribution compatibility for simple programs.
