If this is the reason, perhaps I could hack syncevolution to pretend it is an iPhone?

Yes, at least to see if it makes any difference. You could change the <model> and <manufacturer> settings in the XML config.

Hmm. Unfortunately none of the models works (I tried identifiers for iPhone, PocketPC and Ericsson), while I know that the iPhone definitely works with this client - it was actually because a colleague got his iPhone to work with the Synthesis client, I got myself onto trying syncevolution again.

I also checked that setting the model and the manufacturer actually works - they are properly placed in the outgoing messages (unlike the SyncML version property).

Patrick says that the SyncML version is a red herring. What else could be wrong? Could it be the ssl setup? I could not get the ssl to work, so I switched both options on checking certificates to off - otherwise libsoup complains about trusting the certificates - placing them in various files, as per config did not really help. Or perhaps ssl is another red herring ?

I know from our admin people, that they only support ssl - it is not possible to get this to work on phones not supporting ssl.
