If it uses the failing codepath, it might cause recurring events (all of them, not just one) to become unsyncable so that the server won't receive them, but they probably wouldn't vanish from the phone (unless you're doing a refresh from server, of course) Of course, that bug is far from the only serious bug filed against the N900 calendar.
