Points well taken.
So - for content that already has HTML embedded in it, should I plan on stripping out all of the HTML when generating the feed (take out all body, head, html, and font tags?? I'm already encoding > and < and ampersands. -----Original Message----- From: Bill Kearney [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, February 26, 2005 4:44 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [syndic8] Re: [RSS2-Support] Enclosure URL Question Stuart's dead-on correct with this one. HTML pages are for, well, HTML. RSS feeds, while it's capable of handling limited HTML, is generally expected to be a news-like summary of what are probably HTML pages. The link of an item points over to the HTML page. If you decide to bother with full-content in a feed then be SURE to offer both it and the headline-quality newsfeed. Promote the headline feed as a means to save what might be a LOT of wasted bandwidth due to polling on that full-content one. Now, when using HTML one need to make sure that it's ONLY encoded once. That is when including a snippet of HTML like "BOLD text" that is expected to be shown as a bold-facing of the word "BOLD". To encode this you'd have to use "BOLD text". That form is what's know as "single encoded". Do not make the mistake of double-encoding it and ending up with "<b>BOLD</b> text" as that's double-encoded. The ONLY time double-encoding should be needed is for situations where you actually want the display to show the markup angle brackets. An RSS item from a feed discussing how-to tips for HTML or XML developers might well need it. But for anyone expecting to do simple textual highlighting it shouldn't ever be needed. A word of caution, do not expect much in the way of formatting to work. Many readers strip out most markup. No CSS, no scripting, nothing more than, well, just plain-old bold, italics and a scant few others. Many "web developers" feel the need to format the beejeesus out of their web pages. That's all well and good. But for RSS feeds it's the text CONTENT that's important. Leave the formatting to the web pages and make the feed text compelling enough to have the readers come visit the site. -Bill Kearney Syndic8.com > On Fri, 25 Feb 2005 07:11:48 -0700, Rob Bushway <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > [...] > > The description value contains full html pages. > [...] > > Any ideas? > > Maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but my suggestion would be to not try to > put full HTML pages in a feed of any sort.
