Hi All,

Syndic8 Editors now have the ability to do an instant update of a feed's
metadata with the push of a single button! This button is labeled
"UPDATE META" and is located in the Feed Actions box in the top left.
Here's what happens when this button is pushed:

* The HTML for the site is fetched and parsed

* The metadata tags (as defined in
http://www.syndic8.com/help_metadata.php) are located

* The following metadata tags are respected:
     - dmoz.id
     - tgn.id
     - tgn.name
     - geo.position
     - geo.placename
     - geo.country
     - dc.creator.name
     - dc.creator.e-mail

Here's where they go:
  - The dmoz.id is used to set the feed's DMOZ category
  - The tgn.id (and optionally, the tgn.name) are used to set the feed's
TGN location
  - The geo.position is used to set the feed's DCMI-Point location
  - The geo.placename and geo.country are used to set the feed's GEO-IP
location
  - The dc.creator.name is used to set the feed's creator
  - The dc.creator.e-mail is used to set the feed's creator email (this
is a new field)

* A popup dialog reports on the discovered and stored metadata.

You may be wondering why we care about metadata, and why you should take
the time to put it in to your site. Once we know the location of your
feed, we can do interesting things like showing feeds based on their
Geo-IP location. Here's how to find feeds in Australia or Mexico:

http://www.syndic8.com/feedlist.php?ShowGeoIPLocation=au;Australia
http://www.syndic8.com/feedlist.php?ShowGeoIPLocation=mx;Mexico

Also, sites like http://www.feedmap.net/ can use this metadata to plot
feeds on a map. I've spoken to the developer of that site and we're
going to do some cross-pollenization and cross-linking really soon. You
can see this in action on my blog (http://www.syndic8.com/~jeff/blog/).

At some point there will be APIs and new pages on Syndic8 to do
geographic and location-based queries. Your ideas are invited, as always.

Enjoy,

Jeff;
