I think we need to have high standards for approval, otherwise much of
it could be automated. On the other hand, "perfection" may not be
necessary. If I saw a feed where the *only* problem was a warning
about the image and channel links not matching, I would probably
approve it. However, if that same feed had other minor problems, the
combination of them all might be enough to mark it for repair.

Although less formal, the way I review feeds is somewhat like the
content filtering feature found in recent versions of the Pegasus
email client. In that, various factors are given different weights
that move a message closer to being marked as spam, and there is a
breakpoint at which the cumulative weights earn the spam designation.
The term "mortgage" alone might earn a score of 10, but that and
"refinance" and "homeowner" together might push it past the breakpoint
of 50. "Viagra" immediately goes past that breakpoint.

So how does this relate to Syndic8 reviewing? Well, a mild warning
from the validator, by itself, wouldn't reach the breakpoint of
marking a feed for repair, but the "cumulative score" of that warning
plus other minor issues could be sufficient. Other conditions -- such
as validation errors, significant warnings (e.g., wrong MIME type),
incorrect language tags, a server that times out regularly --
immediately go past the breakpoint and get marked for repair.

In the end, reviewing for approval is a human process, which is
valuable but also implies variability. Each reviewer is going to see
things a bit differently, and any given reviewer may see things
differently from one day to the next, or may learn more which leads to
reviewing things differently. (For example, when I started reviewing,
I didn't realize the significant problems that can be caused by an
incorrect MIME type, which can really break a feed for some consuming
agents.)

Also, if you find yourself looking at a feed and you don't see the
drop-down for changing the status, edit the URL to append &Mode=appr
at the end and submit that -- the drop-down should then appear.

Hope this helps! :)
