Summary: External apps renders targets seems to be broken

Using svn 953

Auto + .dv or .mpg or .avi or .miff or .mng seems to be broken

Also dv, ffmpeg, libav and imagemagick are broken also.

It seems the fix to get these targets working on Windows broke it for
Linux.

man popen tells me:

        The type argument  is a pointer
        to  a null-terminated string  which must  be either  "r" for
        reading or "w" for writing.

The code is using "wb" for writing, because that works on Windows.
