Hello all! I'm new to System 6, though I'm familiar with all MacOs's since, my favourite tools like DiskWarrior and Norton of course don't work on System 6 and I'm at a bit of a loss!!
I have resurrected an SE with 4Mb ram, 40Mb HD, Asante ethernet card and put System 6.0.7 on it. It all works unbelievably fine, except for a recurring problem. Namely I will get some kind of bomb error on a cold startup. They have been: 'illegal instruction'; 'memory manager'; 'address error'. And possibly a couple of others that I have forgotten. I'm not convinced the actual message is particularly relevent. I can boot from a floppy with no problems - either System 6.0.7 or System 7.0.1. Disk Tools reports no problems. I can browse the contents of the hard drive with no problems. Usually with an apparent random combination of floppy System swapping, forcing desktop rebuilds and generally offering good vibes it eventually starts up from it's own hard drive. But today it's being particularly truculent! I have replaced the PRAM battery as it was completely flat and reset all the date/time etc...which it retains. Often when booting from the System 6 floppy if I try to copy a file to the hard drive it comes up with a write error and rebuilds the desktop (I think that error might have something to do with swapping between System 6 and 7?), but I can copy with no problems with the 7.0.1 startup disc. Once it's up and running I can restart it to my heart's content and it's fine. I'm starting to wonder if it is a Hard Drive problem, or am I missing something System 6-wise? All thoughts gratefully received!
