I'm quite an experienced (5 year) amateur programmer for the macintosh and have
about 20 books on mac programming ranging from the first mac to about 1998.
Concerning MacHTTP, it may or may not be difficult to make that program system 6
compatible, depending on what aspects of System 7 it utilizes. Perhaps if I
knew the URL to the source I could judge better.
For the most part, system 7 just has a bunch of add-ons that can be taken out
safely from a program to make it system 6 compatible. I program on sysmte 6
myself (although I hardly have time) and I'm currently working on a side-
scrolling game for my Classic and have already designed a neat little intro
screen that displays my logo "Still 6 Software".
The 68000 processor is in actual fact very fast and very efficient. If you
optimize and take time to program in assembly, you can easily obtain fast
programs including a full-screen sidescroller. I can redraw each frame every 1/
60 th of a second (1 Tick for you programmers) which means without brakes
(delays) I get frame rates of 60 frames / sec!
Anyway, I only get to code about 1-3 hours a week (damn school!), so progress is
slow.
If someone could send me the URL to the MacHTTP source, perhaps sometime in the
future I can help modify it for system 6.
