Regarding the Mac Plus, as I recall when you use external hard drives they
need to be 'interleaved' in a specific way (having to do with how the data
is written on the disk (I think) and therefore how fast it is supplied to
the Mac).  In any case, a more modernly-formatted (is that a word?) drive
might be supplying data too fast for the Plus to cope.

I believe older formatters have this as an option.
