Mac-related Webmasters and/or web designers: This University of Washington-based student publication's (http://www.ruckuscollective.org/) volunteer staff is not Mac-savvy (meaning the whole gamut from 68xxx CISC CPU, PowerPC RISC CPU, G3, G4, G5, Mac OS 6.0.8, Mac OS 7.x.x, Mac OS 8.x.x, Mac OS 9.x.x and Apple OS X builds; Which is all types of Macs used at the University in any way (and by Seattle MUG users), in addition to all the DOS, Windows, Linux and UNIX machines used...).
What suggestions could be offered for html code, etc., in order for the site to change so that Mac users of ALL generations could access the site, including under Netscape Communicator 4.x? The fellow who does the site is a student and probably wouldn't be able to immediately implement anything (swamped/busy with classes), but would appreciate the information for future reference. (and webdesign as well for that matter..) is it a css compatibility problem for the old macs too, or is that just a netscape thing? <snip> "Martin A. Many users on many Platforms also use Netscape 4.x for Email and/or Web browsing (I noted recently that several Windows-using friends of mine are still on Netscape Communicator 4.7, and are not even upgraded to Netscape Communicator 4.8). Netscape 6.x.x and 7.x.x are both unstable and crash on my machines. http://www.ruckuscollective.org/ showed up as a completely black screen with nothing else in Netscape Communicator 4.8 (I can take a screen shot and Email it to you as a JPEG, if you'd like...). It did appear to render in Opera 6.03 for "Classic" Mac OS 8/9, and in iCab 2.96 for "Classic" Mac OS 8/9, although I didn't test all your URLs. One option I've seen even the Seattle Times using, is to provide both a dynamic high-graphic site, and a low-graphic mostly Plain Text site (compare: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/text/ and http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/), both in order to address compatibility and to address 56K modem users (like most of us are); I've also noted that both Seattle Times sites render fine in any Web Browser I've tried. I respectfully suggest that multi-platform, multi-web browser and backwards web browser compatibility would be a wise idea, partly in order for many, many users on many platforms, to be able to view and use your site. - Martin Totusek (Seattle, WA) P.S. I've seen Netscape 3.x.x Gold ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/communicator/english/3.04/mac/all_macs/navigator_gold/netscape3.04Gold_US.hqx and Netscape 4.0.8 ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/communicator/english/4.08/mac/68k_761/navigator_standalone/Nav4.08_US_68K.bin with CFM-68K Runtime Enabler 4.0 extension added under Mac OS 7.x.x http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/System/CFM-68K/CFM-68K_4.0.img.bin (Note: To use Netscape 4.08 with Max OS 7.x.x, you must also have Object Support Library aka ObjectSupportLib (aka OSL) 1.2 in your extensions folder along with the CFM Runtime Enabler 4.0 for 68k; Ignore the Mac OS 7.6.x-only warning when installing under Mac OS 7.1, 7.5.3, 7.5.5...) currently running on a number of older 68030 and 68040 machines, so I'd guess that would be as far back as I'd think of. I was Emailed: i know very little about macs. (and webdesign as well for that matter..) I was told that their site is Windows IE, and also Linux (on Intel-based hardware, not PowerPC) friendly. - Martin P.S. Just for reference, among Mac users, I do know people running Mac OS 6.0.8 and/or Mac OS 7.1 with Update 3 on SEs and Classics (some joke that most 286 CISC CPU machines from "The Other Side" are dead, but their old Macs keep running to this day); They are using softwares like: NCSA Mosaic http://archive.ncsa.uiuc.edu/SDG/Software/MacMosaic/MacMosaicHome.html with version 1.0.3 ftp://ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu/Mac/Mosaic/NCSAMosaic103.hqx being the most common.
