Certain projects in the confusing land of the gnomes do something like this: tracker-miner-$(TRACKER_API_VERSION).pc: tracker-miner.pc cp $< $@ to get the version in the filename of the .pc. But yes that tracker-miner.pc gets generated at configure time. I wonder if in a few years libsystemd.pc should have been libsystemd-1.0.pc because a libsystemd-2.0.pc became needed? ps. In GLib this isn't being done with a cp in Makefile.am and yet other projects (dconf) don't do API versioning with the .pc filename.
