NORDIC COUNTRIES PROTEST DECISION TO CUT SOTOMAYOR'S BAN

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) - Sweden, Denmark and Norway decided
Sunday to file a joint protest over the IAAF's controversial
decision to reduce world high jump record-holder Javier
Sotomayor's doping suspension. "We just made an unanimous
decision," Swedish Track and Field Federation chairman Bengt
Westerberg said in a telephone interview from Uppsala, where the
board was meeting after the national championships. Finland also
was likely to join the Nordic protest, Antti Pihlakoski,
secretary general of the Finnish federation, said from Helsinki.
The initiative came from Denmark's track federation last week,
the day after Sotomayor made his comeback in a French meet. The
Danes were also upset that the International Amateur Athletic
Federation reduced bans of other athletes suspended for doping
offenses.
