Chris,

This is nothing new.  In 1996 50k walker  Valary Spitsyn was beaten 
near death.  His replacement, Mikial Shenekov placed second.  (I 
spelled both those name wrong, sorry).  Rumour had it that the "hit" 
was ordered by Adrei Perlov - Gold Medalist in 92 and now a 
supposed mob boss.  Spitsyn went on this year to break Perlov's 
world best.
