Sorry Brian, but I always have to laugh when someone enters a discussion
by first calling it dumb... That has been quite prevalent on the list of
late, but the people saying such things generally have been contributing
equally to the "dumbness."

I don't dispute any of his splendid accomplishments, but what is it about
mentioning Pre that gets people so fired up? It's precisely that
defensiveness of a cultural icon that is what leads some people to think
he was over rated. All I said was, "Also, some might say that he, too,
got more acclaim than his performances might merit." If you can take that
to mean his performances were not worthy of respect, then I'm afraid you
were looking to make a point rather than reading what I actually said.
The statement was in reference to his place in American and international
distance running history performace-wise relative to where he stands in
the opinion of many fans.
