Williamson Named Assistant Track and Field Coach UA Sports Information- Wednesday, October 11, 2000 --- FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Doug Williamson, who previously served as assistant men’s track and field coach at the University of Arkansas from 1981-1985, has rejoined the Razorbacks in the same capacity to work with the sprinters and the hurdlers UA head coach John McDonnell announced late last week. “One of the prouder accomplishments of my coaching career was to be a part of the first four national championships that were won here,” Williamson said. “For John to present the opportunity to come back is very flattering to me. I think that it shows some serious confidence in me to come back and try to carry on the incredible tradition that has been built here. Quite literally, this is the most unique intercollegiate athletic tradition in America. It is not surpassed in terms of its level of achievement. I am pinching myself everyday and thrilled to be back. It feels very much like coming home.” In a coaching career that has spanned over three decades, Williamson has been a part of four NCAA championship teams, all during his previous stint at Arkansas. Williamson has also coached a total of 13 Olympians, 178 NCAA All-Americans and 10 NCAA Individual Champions. Williamson’s hiring fills the void on the UA staff left by the departure of Steve Silvey, who resigned his post last month to pursue other opportunities after six years as a Razorback assistant coach. Williamson graduated from Northwestern University in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. As a four-year letterwinner for the Wildcats, Williamson served as a captain for the track and field and cross country teams and was also named to the All-Big Ten Conference team. Williamson served as an assistant at Arkansas under McDonnell and current assistant Dick Booth while earning his master’s degree in health education and a Ph.D. in health education and health counseling. During his five years as an assistant coach for the Hogs, Williamson coached the sprinters and the hurdlers, helped the Razorbacks win four NCAA championships and coached 28 All-Americans. In 1985, Williamson headed to the University of Virginia where he served as the director of track and field for a year. During his brief tenure at UVA, Williamson organized the men’s and women’s cross country teams and track and field programs. While there, Williamson led both the men’s and women’s teams to indoor and outdoor Atlantic Coast Conference titles and coached seven All-Americans. Williamson then moved on to serve as the head track and field coach for the men and women at the University of Alabama for 10 years. While coaching the Crimson Tide, Williamson helped to develop Alabama into a highly respected program and led the combined teams to four Southeastern Conference Championships, eight top-five national finishes and 12 top-10 finishes. For the past two years, Williamson served as the executive director at the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club in Steamboat Springs, Colo., where he directed 45 coaches and six administrative assistants in support of programs that involved 600 student-athletes in five competitive disciplines. Fifteen of those athletes competed in the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Prior to his career at Arkansas, Williamson served as a teacher and track and field coach at Nichols Junior High in Evanston, Ill., from 1970 to 1971, Lockport (Ill.) High School from 1971 to 1976, and Naperville (Ill.) High School from 1976 to 1980. Williamson is married to the former Jennifer Owens.
