Just to show how fortunes come and go, and one shouldn't make too much out of any one 
year's results, the following chart is an analysis of the T&FN World Rankings in the 
men's 100 since the first year, 1947. The Rankings are scored 10-9-8..... making the 
perfect score 55. The best year ever was the U.S. in 1982, with 49. Only in one year 
has the U.S. not been the leader. Here's the leading nation for each year (note how 
the U.S. scores go wildly up and down, recently near historic lows):
