From: http://www.cu-sports.com/track/releases/0001/010205st.shtml by Big 12 Conference Office Issued February 5, 2001 Honor Awarded After Freshman Set New CU Record Gorton Named Big 12 Athlete of the Week DALLAS - Baylor's Brandon Couts and Kansas' Charlie Gruber have earned the Big 12 Male Co-Athletes of the Week honors while Colorado's Sara Gorton has been named the Big 12 Women's Athlete of the Week announced by the conference office Monday. Gorton set the Buffaloes' school record in the 3,000-meters. The Phoenix, Ariz., native ran a 9:11.59, which was good for first place at the Nebraska Quadrangle in Lincoln, Neb. The freshman distance runner destroyed the CU record set by Muffy Raveling in 1996 of 9:13.45. Gorton's time leads the nation in the 3,000-meters. Gorton joins the Buffs' Amaris Buchanan, who won the award Jan. 15 for her efforts in the 60-meter dash. Couts, of Greenville, Texas, posted an automatic qualifying time of 46.71 at the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. It was the senior's first 400-meter race since June. Couts later anchored the Bears' 4x400-meter relay team that had a first-place time of 3:06.06, the 25th best collegiate time ever recorded in the 4x400-meter relay. Couts, along with Bayno Kamani, Zsolt Szeglet and Floyd Thompson, defeated Auburn (3:09.50) by more than three seconds in posting the nation's first 4x400-meter automatic qualifying time of the year. KU's Gruber set the school record and an Anschutz Pavillion record in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:21.71. The Denver, Colo., native outran a 14-year-old record by more than two seconds. The senior also ran a leg for the 4x800-meter relay team that finished second. Gruber ranks first in both the 1,000-meters and the mile in the Big 12. His time of 4:00.79 last week in the mile is the third fastest in the country.
