Stacy has been so good for the last year that it's surprising for her to lose, but the real shocker is for Pavla to win. Any vaulter can have an off day. (Some "off day"--Stacy's 4.51 would have won the last WIC at Maebashi in 1999!) On the other hand, Hamácková entered the competition with a SB of 4.43, backed by 4.41 and 4.40, and defeated four vaulters with better marks in 2001--Dragila (4.70), Feofanova (4.65), Suttle (4.56), and Isinbayeva (4.47)--as well as Balakhonova with an equal 4.34! For your interest, I'll list the placings in this meet and in the first two women's indoor championships.
