Assistance to avoid running on empty
That's the mission of the Boulder-based Colorado Elite Track Club

Tuesday, May 15, 2001 - BOULDER - Today's American female distance runners face
tremendous odds once they finish their collegiate athletic careers. Only a select few
find a way to support themselves; many have to give up the sport within a few years -
before they reach their physical peak.

In many ways the problem is exacerbated in Colorado. The state is rich in talent, in
athletes and coaches. The Front Range is blessed with myriad ideal training settings.
However, meager material support is available unless distance runners reach the top
echelon in their events.

Citing the lack of opportunity in the land of opportunity, University of Colorado
assistant track coach Jason Drake founded the Colorado Elite Track Club for women in
Boulder last fall.

U.S. men have 'home-field edge'

If there is such a thing as a "home-field advantage" in road racing, the runners on
the U.S. men's team competing in the May 28 Bolder Boulder will have it. That is
because the three runners — Adam Batliner, Clint Wells and Shawn Found — are all
locals, friends who competed at the University of Colorado.
