ROMAN SEBRLE took the decathlon into new territory in Gotzis last night by
breaking the world record and becoming the first man to score more than
9,000 points.

The Czech soldier, 26, bounced back from his disappointment at finishing
second in the Olympics to score 9,026pts for the 10 disciplines at the
annual multi-event meeting in Austria.

In a field containing the Olympic champion, Erki Nool and former world
record holder, Tomas Dvorak, his Czech team-mate, Sebrle improved his
personal best by 269 points to achieve an equivalent of the first sub-four
minute mile.

Sebrle, who won the world indoor heptathlon title in March, led the
competition from the first day when his performances included a 8.11-metre
long jump. "I wanted to take this chance in great conditions," he said. "Now
I'll rest and then see what to do next."

Dwain Chambers produced his fastest start to a season by winning the 100m at
the European Clubs Championship in Madrid. The Briton, 23, clocked 10.12sec
to finish ahead of Francis Obikwelu, the Nigerian who was competing for
Sporting Lisbon of Portugal.

Chambers was joined on the Belgrave roll of honour by Phillips Idowu, who
won the triple jump with 17.23m, putting him on top of the world rankings.
