Netters:
Soime
interesting relay entries are shaping up from New Jersey for the National meet
at Raleigh.
Of
course, I have no idea at this point if all will be able to make the trip. A
great many graduations take place in our state on or near the National dates and
this may affect the entries. But, on the surface, it would appear that a number
of our state records may fall there.,
One
team with no graduation worries, despite its almost all-senior cast is the
Christian Brothers 4M or 3200 team which had that interesting near double
indoors, winningthe former race at Landover and losing a close one to John Jay
athe next day in NY.
It is
still uncertain which race the Colts will pick at Raleigh, but the 64M (or 6400,
whichever it may be) seems more likely. Off recent individual performances, a
prjected time would be below 17:30. Haddonfield's all-underclass team, which ran
17:50 or so at the rainy East Coast Relays, should also be there in force.
Cherokee, which beat Haddonfield that night, could choose the DMR.
On
the girls' side at that distance, Voorhees has three girls running between 5:01
and 5:10 right now and a 4th capable of around 5:15-20. This small Hunterdon
County school (a sister school to North Hunterdon, home of so many NJ distance
stars of the opast---Anne Marie Lauck, Jodie Bilotta, Andy Martin, Brad Hudson)
is also a hot number in either the 3200 or DMR
Red
Bank has three girls running around 2:15 without pressure in the 800 going into
the all-group meet, but may be even better at the DMR, a race they ran at Penn
without one key operative. A sub-12:00 is likely if they go that
way.
Camden's boys seem primed for a big effort in all three sprint relays. They have
been running one man down for point purposes soi far in the state meet, but will
put it all together Wednesday in our all-group affair. If they get the state
record there, the 800 may be the main focus in Raleigh. They haven't really put
one together yet at this disdtance outdoors since Jamar Ervin was not available
in the relay season here, but sub-1:25 is not out of the question.
This
is just the tip of the iceberg, of course, The bad weather at the ECR might help
in getting more teams to Raleigh to show what they are capable of.
Individually, Dwight Ruff of Camden would be out best bet in the hurdles, but he
also wants to run at Richmond. The present plan is for him to run whatever
trials or finals he has to at Richmond in SDatuirday afternoon, then get down to
Raleigh for the relays that night.
