I think Craig knows exactly what state the sport is in, be it good or ill.  
But from his first day in office part of his role has always been as a sort 
of cheerleader for the sport.  I think you heard the cheerleader talking.

What is more important than what Craig says to a reporter trying to put 
together a story or produce a sound bite about Death of Track is what he 
*does*.  And Craig has certainly shown a willingness to take every action he 
can think of to enhance the popularity of the sport.  I don't always agree 
with the actions, but at least he's out there pitching.  And if he wants to 
throw in a little hyperbole about how great we're doing, well I can live 
with it.
