Most of the brakemen/pushers on the US bobsled team have track backgrounds - both the women were nationally ranked - Johnson as a heptathlete and Vonetta Flowers (nee Jeffery) in the LJ (6.62m/21-8.75). For the men, in addition to Hines, both Steele twins (Darrin and Dan) and Bill Schuffenhauer are/were 8100-plus decathletes and are in the four-man event.
