I think Randal has what might be close to the best of both (all) worlds. There could be a superior qualifying mark for during the season and a second level mark for the conferences. The top conference places (1 and 2) and second-level marks qualify to NC nationals - something for peakers and chasers. If more athletes are there - great - maybe give superior qualifiers a bye round.
This way the people who should be at Nationals are given the best chance to be there. And, relay meets stay, traditions/schedules are not altered, one-bad-day issue eliminated, budgets are left alone ... are there any independent schools out there?
