Nearly two months after breaking Mary Decker's 24-year-old school and conference track
record in the indoor 1,500 meters, it's still hard for Sara Gorton to put the
accomplishment into perspective.

Which is understandable considering she was still three years away from being born
when Decker's Colorado and Big Eight/Big 12 benchmark (4:41.21) was set in 1978.

"I didn't know that Mary Decker had gone to CU until we were on the bus ride home and
(head coach) Mark (Wetmore) told me I had beat her record," Gorton recalled of her
historic 4:40.35 finish. "It's a big accomplishment to be compared to such a great
runner. It was really exciting after I found out."
