According to the Los Angeles Times, there will be an
announcement today that a new track and field stadium
will soon be built in the Carson area. It will be
part of a complex that includes a soccer stadium, a
tennis stadium and a velodrome. Ground was broken in
February, and the complex will be known as the Home
Depot National Training Center.

The athletics stadium will have 5,000 permanent seats
and can be expanded to 30,000 by using temporary
seating sections that can be shifted among the
center's venues.

The main guy behind this deal is Tim Leiweke, who runs
the Staples Center in downtown L.A. He says that the
track and field facility will be pursuing bids to host
the USATF Championships in 2005, the IAAF World Cup in
2006, the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials and even the 2009
IAAF World Championships.
