Teter named USATF Athlete of the Week

U.S. indoor and outdoor 800m champion Nicole Teter has been named USA Track
& Field’s Athlete of the Week after turning in impressive performances in
the 800 and 1500 meters last week in Europe.

Teter ran a U.S.-leading and personal-best time of 1:57.97 in the 800 meters
on July 2 at the Athletissima track meet in Lausanne, Switzerland. On July
5, she won the first major European title of her career, winning the 1500m
at Meeting Gaz de France in Paris, in a time of 4:05.52.

Also at the meet in Lausanne, three-time World 100m hurdles champion Gail
Devers continued her winning form as she ran a world-leading time of 12.40
seconds in the 100m hurdles.

Marion Jones ran 10.89 in the 100m at Paris, which was the best in the world
this year until Zhanna Pintusevich-Block of Ukraine ran 10.84 on July 7 in
Rethymno, Greece. Seneca Lassiter also ran a U.S.-leading men’s 1500m time
of 3:36.73 in Paris.

On the youth level, Kerron Clement was named Verizon Male Athlete of the
Meet and Trisa Nickoley was named Verizon Female Athlete of the Meet at
USATF’s Youth Athletics Championships in Miami, Fla.

CLARIFICATION: Sunday's Youth Athletics release should have stated that
16-year-old Trisa Nickoley, of Shawnee, Kan., broke the intermediate girls
U.S. 800m record with her time of 2:08.94. The previous U.S. record of
2:09.69, set by Liz Mueller, had stood for 11 years.

Now in its second year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to
recognize performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree
each week and features the athlete on the USATF Web site. Selections are
based on top performances and results from the previous week.
