De Reuck named Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS – Colleen De Reuck has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete
of the Week following her victory Monday at the USA 20K Championships at the
25th New Haven Road Race.

De Reuck caught and passed defending champion Milena Glusac in the second
mile and dominated thereafter, winning the race in 1 hour, 7 minutes, 53
seconds, making her the #5 U.S. performer all-time. Libbie Hickman was the
runner-up in 1:09:02. De Reuck now has a commanding lead in the 2002 USARC
women’s standings with 49 points. Hickman is in second place with 29 points.

Earlier this year De Reuck won the bronze medal in the women’s 8K
competition at the World Cross Country Championships in Dublin, Ireland, and
she set a new U.S. road record of 38:53 in winning the Bloomsday 12K May 5
in Spokane, Wash. Other wins for De Reuck this year came at the USA 7-Mile
Championship at Bix 7 in Davenport, Iowa in 37:44, and the Steamboat Classic
4-mile in Peoria, Ill., in 19:59.

Other outstanding U.S. performers last week included Marion Jones setting a
2002 world-leading mark in winning the women’s 200 meters at the Memorial
Van Damme Golden League meet in Brussels in 22.11 seconds. Jones also won
the 100m earlier that day in 10.88.

World outdoor record holder and Olympic gold medalist Stacy Dragila equaled
her 2002 U.S.-leading outdoor pole vault performance with a clearance of
4.72 meters/15 feet, 5.75 inches in Brussels, and David Krummenacker ran a
U.S.-leading time of 1:43.92 in the 800m. Four-time U.S. women’s 400m
hurdles champion Sandra Glover set the U.S.-leading mark of 54.40. Both
performances took place in Rovereto, Italy.

Despite heavy rains and gusting winds, short distance specialist Tim Seaman
won the USA 40K Race Walk Championship Sunday in Ocean Township, N.J., in
the new personal best and event record time of 3 hours, 6 minutes, 15
seconds. Susan Armenta set a new U.S. 40K best by winning the women’s
competition in 3:32:08, and third-place finisher Sherry Brosnahan set a new
masters women’s 40 & over world best with her time of 4:15:18.

Now in its second year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to
recognize performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree
each week and features the athlete on the USATF Web site. Selections are
based on top performances and results from the previous week.
