Subject: t-and-f: Lassiter apologizes for mistake at World Cup

I guess this answers the guilt question, now for the penalty phase.

-------

MADRID, Spain -- U.S. distance runner Seneca Lassiter could be punished
by USA Track & Field for setting the pace for a Kenyan in the 1,500
meters at the World Cup.

Bernard Lagat, who trains with Lassiter, won the event in 3 minutes,
31.20 seconds. Lassiter, the defending U.S. outdoor champion at 1,500
meters, finished last in 4:05.82.

American officials said Lassiter's actions called the integrity of the
U.S. team into question. Pacesetters are common in grand prix events,
but the World Cup is a team event.

In a statement, USA Track & Field called Lassiter's behavior "grossly
inappropriate in any national team competition'' and said his case would
be sent to its board of review for disciplinary action.

The 25-year-old Lassiter said he was not in competitive shape for the
race. He could receive a written reprimand, have his financial aid
discontinued or face "other more severe penalties,'' the statement said.

Lassiter issued a letter of apology Saturday. He said he had "no
financial arrangement'' with Lagat.

"My intentions were in no way meant to disrespect the team, the United
States or this competition,'' he said. "I made a mistake that I am
greatly sorry for, which will never happen again.

"I hope to have the privilege to represent the USA in the future so that
I can demonstrate my true character.''
