FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Tuesday, October 8, 2002 Torres named Athlete of the Week INDIANAPOLIS – University of Colorado senior Jorge Torres has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after his record-breaking win at the Rocky Mountain Shootout cross country race Saturday in Boulder. Torres ran 24 minutes, 7 seconds for 8,000 meters to break Adam Goucher's 1998 course record by five seconds. Torres' win led Colorado, the defending NCAA Division I Cross Country Champion, to the team title. Torres twin brother Edwardo was the runner-up in 24:58. The Buffaloes totaled 15 points in winning their 12th straight men’s Rocky Mountain Shootout team title, with Air Force a distant runner-up with 50 points. Also at the Rocky Mountain Shootout, Colorado senior Molly Austin won her second straight women’s individual title, leading the #4 ranked CU women to their 11th Rocky Mountain Shootout team crown. Austin grabbed individual honors by winning in 20:23 (5.8 km), with her teammate Natalie Florence finishing second in 20:49. In other top performances last week, Stanford sophomore Ryan Hall led the top-ranked Cardinal team to victory at the Notre Dame Invitational on October 4, winning the individual competition in 24:10. Stanford's women, sparked by a 1-2-3 finish by Sara Bei (16:48), Lauren Fleshman (16:49) and Alicia Craig (16:49), also won at Notre Dame. Dave Davis, who competed for Team USA at this year's World Cross Country Championships in Dublin, Ireland (short course), ran a quick 23:14 for 8,000 meters to win at the Willamette Invitational in Oregon on Saturday. Now in its second year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF Web site.
