Marla Runyan's mile-to-marathon hop is certainly amazing. But there's more. Don't
forget that she was primarily a high jumper before becoming a heptathlete at San Diego
State. Can you picture a Kenyan girl Fosbury flopping?
We also might note the New York efforts of two geezers with mile credentials.
Eamonn Coghlan of Ireland, returning to the city where he became known as "Chairman of
the Boards," ran the NYC Marathon in 3:00:55. He'll turn 50 later this month.
Thomas Wessinghage of Germany ("Doctor of the Ovals"?) was 22nd in his age group at
NYC, running 3:03:51 at age 50.
Too bad he wasn't at the 21-mile mark when the lady keeled over. (See column on dead

And another ex-miler completed his own marathon today -- Jim Ryun winning his fourth
term in Congress out of an Eastern Kansas district.
And this will make you REALLY feel old:
Ryun has two grandchildren.
