January 31, 2005 -- The United States Track Coaches Association announced that Nate Brannen of Michigan and Maureen McCandless of Pittsburgh have been selected as the Athletes of the Week for NCAA Division I track & field.

Nate Brannen of Michigan :

Michigan senior Nate Brannen set a new school and Canadian record in the mile run with his time of 3:55.11 to finish fifth among the elite 12-man international field at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games on Saturday, Jan 29. Brannen's time of is the fastest ever recorded electronically at the collegiate level and secured his first NCAA automatic qualifying time of the season. Tony Waldrop of North Carolina clocked 3:55.0 in the mile run in 1974, which still stands as the fastest ever recorded by hand. Brannen will join the Wolverines this Friday and Saturday (Feb. 4-5) at the annual Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind.

Maureen McCandless of Pittsburgh :

Pittsburgh senior Maureen McCandless won the 5,000 meters and broke the meet record with a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 15:48.10 at the Penn State National Open at State College, PA on Saturday, Jan 29. McCandless' performance would have been the third-fastest all of last indoor season in the 5,000 meters behind Kim Smith of Providence and Alicia Craig of Stanford. McCandless is expected compete at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York City this Friday and Saturday (Feb. 4-5).
