April 19, 2005 -- The United States Track Coaches Association announced that Wallace Spearmon, Jr. of Arkansas and Candice Scott of Florida have been selected as the Athletes of the Week for NCAA Division I track & field.

Wallace Spearmon, Jr. of Arkansas :

Arkansas sophomore Wallace Spearmon, Jr. ran a world-leading 200 meter time of 19.97 seconds en route to the win at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California on Sunday, April 17. Spearmon, who is coming off the NCAA Indoor title and U.S. record in the event, also broke the Arkansas school record of 20.07, previously held by Tyson Gay. The Fayetteville, Arkansas native's name also made it into the stadium and meet record books, as he bested the previous record of 20.02 by Jamaica's Chris Williams. The John McDonnell Invitational is next on the schedule for the Razorbacks on April 23rd at John McDonnell Field.

Candice Scott of Florida :

Florida senior Candice Scott completed a string of impressive throws in the shot put and hammer throw in two different meets on the same weekend. At the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Arizona on Saturday, April 16, Scott finished second in the shot put with her heave of 55-07.50 (16.95m). Scott's toss is also good enough for second on the current Southeastern Conference list. The lady Gators then traveled to Walnut, California on Sunday, April 17 to compete in the Mt. SAC Relays. Scott placed second overall in the hammer throw and was the top collegian with her national-leading mark of 223-02 (68.02m). Florida returns to action April 28-30 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the prestigious Penn Relays.
