April 25, 2005 -- The United States Track Coaches Association announced that Walter Dix of Florida State and Chaunte Howard of Georgia Tech have been selected as the Athletes of the Week for NCAA Division I track & field.

Walter Dix of Florida State :

Florida State freshman Walter Dix came away with two individual titles and was a part of a winning relay en route to helping lead the Seminoles to the ACC Outdoor Championship team title at Tallahassee, Fla. Dix ran an ACC Championship meet best time of 10.22 seconds in the 100 meters and then recorded a time of 20.41 in the 200 meters while winning both events. Dix also ran the third leg of the winning 4x100 meter relay where they clocked 39.62. He contributed 22.5 points to the team score and joins former Seminole Craphonso Thorpe as the only member to win the 100 and 200 meter dashes in the same season. The historic Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Penn. this weekend are next on the schedule for the Seminoles.

Chaunte Howard of Georgia Tech :

Georgia Tech junior Chaunte Howard scored 27 points and posted the top mark in the world in the high jump to help lead the Yellow Jackets to a third place finish at the ACC Outdoor Championships at Tallahassee, Fla. Howard, a native of Riverside, Calif., cleared 6-04.75 in the high jump to win her 26th consecutive collegiate competition. The mark is also the best in the world so far this season. Howard's weekend also saw her take second in the long jump with a mark of 20-03.50, fifth in the triple jump at 42-07 and placed fourth in the 100 meters, although it was only contested for 90 meters since the race started at the wrong line. Howard also competed in the 100 meter hurdles while clocking 13.90 in the prelims, but did not make the final. The historic Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Penn. this weekend are next on the schedule for the Yellow Jackets.
