CORAL SPRINGS · Viktoria Andonova, one of the nation's best jumpers, signed
with Miami.
Ranked No. 1 in the nation for most of last year and earlier this season in
the high jump, the Coral Springs grad swept district and region titles this
season despite a knee injury that forced her out of her third and final
state meet.
Andonova won four state titles her sophomore and junior years -- two in the
high jump and two in the triple jump -- and broke the state record (6-0)
last year. She set school records in the high, triple and long jumps. Her
personal best in the high jump is 6-1½, which already ranks among the
nation's top college jumpers.
The honors student was recruited by most of the top track programs,
including UCLA and Florida.
"She has already jumped heights that are scoring at the national meets,"
Coral Springs track coach Brantley Barr said. "She can step right in there
and compete at the national level for them. It's nice she stayed close to
home so we can go down and watch her. I will not be surprised if she is an
NCAA champion and at the next level before she leaves UM."
Her mother and coach, Lyudmila, is a former world-record holder and Olympian
from Bulgaria. She is expected to help coach the jumpers at UM. The family
moved from Bulgaria five years ago. Andonova is working on her U.S.
citizenship so she can compete for the United States.
