There was that weird tablet at Verulamium (St Albans) which is like a triangular tablet but with 4 "scallops" along one edge, with a hole per scallop, making 5 holes in total on the tablet.

Did the Romans really use triangular tablets?  Peter seems to think that
all the supposed triangular tablets found at Roman sites were actually
used for other purposes such as rope/cord making. 
Jenny, I agree with Peter, although I have no evidence for what those triangular tablets might have actually produced.
