Separate as in a totally different road, with it's own verges,
bridges, tunnels etc. The buses use these to bypass the worst of the
traffic jams near the city centre, and then change to using normal
streets when they get to the outer suburbs.

If you look here

http://www.nearmap.com/?ll=-27.488516,153.03282&z=20&t=k&nmd=20100912

there is dual carriage way highway on the left, with 3-4 lanes each
way, then on the right is a busway (with bus) - it's a single lane
each way, just separated by a line. If you follow it north and south,
you'll see that there are occasional connections to the other streets,
but it's basically a private highway for buses.
