Police can always ask you for your ID. In rural areas where there is an occasional car passing, you don't have a large chance of getting fined. It's different when it becomes a popular detour to get around daily traffic jams. Than they might start checking it. In Mechelen they use cameras with license plate recognition to protect some neighbourhoods from cars driving through in order to avoid the traffic jams. regards m
