Hello! The wiki page https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:route%3Dferry says that "
*No relation should be used even if the key route <https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:route>=* suggests this.".* However more or less 10% of the route=ferry objects are relations, the routers and renderers seems to deal well with it and there are very long routes that shouldn't be a unique way.
