I think "bring_own_bbq=yes" is sensible; "bbq=designated" is a little confusing, but probably also correct.
The tag leisure=firepit is for a structure or spot designated for open fires, such as a fire ring made of stones or bricks, or a metal fire pit. I checked the page for amenity=bbq and noticed that back in 2016 there was a line added that suggests this tag could be used for places used for BBQ, but this contradicts the main definition about it being an apparatus or structure used for grilling. Apparently the German page for amenity=bbq, since it was first made in 2012, has used a very different definition, which translates as: "A barbecue area is an open air barbecue area, often in conjunction with a barbecue hut. In cities, these are mostly in green areas. Outside villages, there are barbecue areas on tourist routes (eg cycle paths)." "One distinguishes between free barbecue areas, where you have to take care of the grill yourself and fixed barbecue areas with existing grill and, as a rule, seating." So this implies that in Germany the tag may have been used as a synonym for tourism=picnic_site plus bring_own_bbq, in addition to the usual definition. I've added a question to the German talk page, since it's not good to have very different definitions for the same tag in different languages.
