Personally, I would agree with 2 - a rectangular leisure=pitch for the actual playing area, inside a leisure=recreation_ground e.g. https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=18/-28.05676/153.40698 As you say though, lots of people will say the opposite? :-( Thanks Graeme
