Nested tag lib not working.

Hi,

I am attempting to use a few tags in a nested pattern and am getting an error for my 
trouble. The inner tag is derived from a database recordset that I am looping over 
with a forEach tag:

...

pageContext.setAttribute("r", r);

...

<c:forEach items="${r.rows}" var="value" varStatus="status" begin="${param.begin}" 
end="${param.begin + perPage -1}">

<!-- This is the line giving me trouble-->
<fmt:formatDate value="${<c:out value="${value.birthdate}"/>}"/>

...

</c:forEach>

The error:

jsp:94: expected `>' at ``$'' (for tag `' at line 94). 

Any ideas as to what may be causing this problems?
