That's the oversimplified version of why Xanadu failed. There were many other
factors, but the main reason why it didn't directly influence other systems (as
a hypertext system) was that it was trade-secret. Note that a lot of ideas 
invented
in the context of Xanadu, such as promises, *have* influenced later systems 
despite
that. Indeed, although it wasn't successful commercially, as a research project 
you
could consider Xanadu to have been wildly successful compared to the vast 
majority
of research.
